Self Portrait

Why did you pick this particular image over the others?
because of the distortion of the background and it's a reflection of myself in a tea kettle, which also reflects my interests as an avid tea drinker. I also like the off-center, simple composition.

2. How did you setup / compose your photo?
I set up this photo by setting up the tea kettle on the ground in a secluded spot in the classroom against the wall on the even ground. I then took various images of myself, with the camera infront of and hiding my face, all crouching down on the ground looking down at the kettle. I then backed up so more of the background of the image was visible and placed the camera on the ground, composing the image as though the kettle is meant to be the main subject from far away when really from close up it becomes obvious that my figure is. I used automatic focus, as I couldn't look through the viewfinder while composing this image, but I did intentionally focus on my reflection instead of the surface of the kettle.

3. What stands out the most when you first see it?
the kettle, which was the intention of this photo. I didn't want the self portrait/ reflection aspect of this image to be immediately obvious, so I backed up from the kettle and used it's surroundings as well so the reflection of myself doesn't become apparent at first.

4. What leads your eye around from place to place?
the horizon line, the handle and spout of the kettle and the distorted reflected bars on the ceiling all lead the viewers eyes around the image.

5. What title(s) could you give this artwork?
Self Reflection in Kettle
