Night Photography

1. Why did you pick this particular image over the others?
Because I liked that it wasn't immediately recognizable as well as the high ISO, grainy look of this image. I also liked the off-center composition and the variation in line caused by the sparks.

2. How did you setup / compose your photo
Originally I was photographing the fireplace at my cottage. I was coming out with blurry pictures that weren't very interesting because of the slow shutter speed. As we poked the fire we realized that it released a bunch of sparks, and had te idea that those would show much better light trails than the flames of the fire. I began photographing the fire as my boyfriend vigorously prodded at it, and then experimented with cropping the images to make them more interesting and less recognizable. This one turned out the best in my opinion because the sparks are the clearest and most interesting and didn't show the logs from the fire. I composed this one off-centered hoping that through trial and error I would come out with an image where the sparks where going more off to the side. I shot this image on shutter priority in a dark room on auto focus.

3. What stands out the most when you first see it?
What stands out most to me is the wispy sparks from the centre to the top of the image, although I would consider the focal point to be the bottom- left/ center of the image where there is a dense collection of sparks.

4. What leads your eye around from place to place?
The light trails from the sparks are effective in leading the eye around as they are directional lines that go with the flow of the image, more straight and wispy far away from the focal point and dense spirals closer to it.

5. What title(s) could you give this artwork?
Sparks
